I got the sega master system for xmas, but not this game. I'm so glad i never owned this game. as you could only pick the sword man. no dwarf, no woman. and it was only a one player game. I would have been very dissapointed. Still, it does play ok, but was an easy game to complete as you just jumped up and swung your sword at every baddie and progressed through the game easily

Exciting rounds are in this, with the ability to ride monsters to aid you in your quest, don't forget your magic to defeat Death Adder. However, the lack of control and two players as in the Mega Drive version with Tyris Flare and Guilis Thunderhead lets this down.

Comments: This was a very good conversion attempt from Sega to take Golden Axe from MD to SMS, but this version just lacked gameplay. The fact that the character motions are less fluid makes it difficult to judge collision detection. The level widths are also shorter so you have less room to move around when fighting and the game is alot harder than it's MD version. Sum action, but the fun is limited.

Comments: I might be the biggest GOlden Axe fan in the southwest. I have an original coinop GOlden Axe arcade machine, and I have all of the games for Sega systems (except the fighting for Saturn). Here are my ranks for the Sega Golden Axes- GGolden Axe (Genesis)- this is a great translation from the arcade. THe extra levels are a great bonus too. It is the best Golden Axe game for a home system. Golden Axe 2- (Genesis)- This game is fun too. Its pretty loyal to the first. It is harder than the original though. A must have. Golden Axe (SMS)- This game is really shitty compared to the other Axes. It is so slow and the colors are so spare. Since it is the Golden Axe, I give it a perfect score, but i still never play it. Ax Battler (Game Gear)- this game gets very boring. It had the right idea, but it spared everyone to death at times. Golden Axe (arcade)- the all time champ of the Axe. What a heroic game. I love playing this shit at home on my arcade machine. I put it at a local movie theater for a while but got tired of driving over there to play, so now its in my room. I play all the time. THE KING! Golden Axe Warrior (SMS)- I just got this game and havent started yet. I will soon though.

Comments: A commendable effort. When will people realise that the only real difference between the characters was their magic. And as you can choose your magic, you can effectively play as any of the characters. Though some of the graphics are toned down (such as nobody comes out of the floor), and only girls can ride the dragons, this is ace. It's faster than the 16-bit version, but much easier, as it only has 5 levels. It lacks a 2 player mode, but remember this is only 8-bit. 2 player would slow it down too much. Overall, this is the closest to Streets of Rage/Final Fight you can get on Master System (except the game actual game Streets of Rage, which was released way after this). Ace.

Comments: Golden Axe is a great button smashing game. Game's frame rate is slow. Besides being slow, the game truly delivers a fun experience! Pretty good translation from arcade to system.

Comments: Compromised version, but compares very favourably with the C64 translation (Jeroen Tel soundtrack excepted - the SMS music/ FX are OK, but only by SMS standards). The arcade gameplay has survived relatively intact and the graphics are almost as good. I would also beg any severe critics of SMS Golden Axe to play the Spectrum version before settling on judgement. A commendable effort.

Comments: This would always be a good game despite what system it is on, but there is always something missing from it and in my opinion the Arcade version is the only true classic, but anyway its a good medieval beat em up, but by no means great, because i used to like the blood and permanent dead bodies that lied around in the arcade version. All of that is missing on every console conversion.
