This game is great. It reminds me of my second eldest brother. I was the Sega Champion, but he was the first I remember watching play it at primary school when we had a fete. Everyone had a stall of their wares, and a kid in my brothers class had his Sega Mark I and people lined up to play. I just finished the game today on emulator/rom. Classic. The end is sad though (black screen - "The End"). I give this about a 7 out of 10. Until Joe Musashi becomes Godfather of Neo Zeed, make mine SMS!

The atmosphere and music of the game is compelling. The graphics and backgrounds are charming. I don't like the fact that the player has to "wait" until they've killed half a level before the magic becomes accessible. Press and hold jump, when Joe lands he looks like he's doing some mystical prayer-like pose, he is then ready to use magic, just push button A (attack). What also sucks about the magic is that you can't use it on the mothers (bosses).

I first saw this game when I visited a friend across the road from me. He was engrossed in the game. I asked if I couldcould have a go. He said, "No, it would be too complicated for you." Which was a funny statement, considering my notoriety for finishing almost every Sega game I played. I was known as the Sega champion.
About a couple of years later when the tight-wad friend let me borrow it, I clocked it (defeated, completed) the game on my first turn. My very first turn.
Now when I play it, I can't even find the shield, or the ray gun. I can't even get past the first sector (green gate after computer console), next to section C. What the hell is wrong with me?
I give this game about a 7 out of 10. Mate, pretty sweet graphics, sound, gameplay and atmosphere for '88!
Until Alex Kidd becomes an old fogey: make mine Sega!! :P
